MONROE COUNTY MAN DIES AT AGE OF 104

Probably the Oldest Citizen of Monroe County Passes Away in South End Last week Levi Worthington, probably the oldest citizen in Monroe County, passed to a better world after spending five score and four years of usefulness in this old world.

Two years before his demise he was received into God’s church and died in grace. Following is the account as appeared in the Holly Grove Leader:

"Levi Worthington died Sunday morning, September 5th, 1920, at the residence of John Self, who married his granddaughter, Miss Taylor, near Valley Grove church."

"Mr. Worthington was buried at Shiloh church cemetery on Monday, September 6th, at noon. It is thought he was the oldest citizen of Monroe County, Arkansas. He was born in South Carolina, and fought through the civil war, and came to Arkansas soon after the close of that war, and raised his family in Arkansas, and leaves a large body of descendants."

"On the 10th day of November, 1918, the day before the World Armistice was signed, Mr. Worthington surrendered his soul to the claims of Jesus Christ, the world’s only saviour and was baptized by the Rev. J. H. Morrison, and received into the communion of the Valley Grove Presbyterian Church."

"According to the best records of the civil war, and the recollections of those who knew him, and his comrades of the civil war, he was 42 years of age in 1860."

"Therefore, he was 102 years of age when baptized into the church, and was 104 years of age when he died. His faith was clear to the end; he spent much of the last day kneeling in prayer; but without pain saying he was going to die."
