1890's Census Records
The 1890 U.S. Federal Census:
- Census Day was 2 June 1890.
- The eleventh census included the states of Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming; the District of Columbia; and the territories of Alaska, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Indian.
- The questionnaire was divided into three distinct sections.
- The first section provided space to tally the following information about each family:
- Number of dwelling house in the order of visitation
- Number of families in this dwelling-house
- Number of persons in this dwelling-house
- Number of family in the order of visitation
- Number of persons in this family
- The second section provided space to tally the following information about each member of the family:
- Christian name in full, and initial of middle name, surname
- Whether a soldier, sailor, or marine during the civil war (U.S. or Conf.) or widow of such person
- Relationship to head of family
- Whether white, black, mulatto, quadroon, octoroon, Chinese, Japanese, or Indian
- Sex
- Age at nearest birthday. If under one year, give age in months
- Whether single, married, widowed, or divorced
- Whether married during the census year (June 1, 1889, to May 31, 1890)
- Mother of how many children, and number of these children living.
- Place of birth
- Place of birth of Father
- Place of birth of Mother
- Number of years in the United States
- Whether naturalized
- Whether naturalization papers have been taken out
- Profession, trade, or occupation
- Months employed during the census year (June 1, 1889, to May 31, 1890.)
- Attendance at school (in months) during the census year (June 1, 1889, to May 31, 1890.)
- Able to Read
- Able to Write
- Able to speak English. If not, the language or dialect spoken
- Whether suffering from acute or chronic disease, with name of disease and length of time afflicted
- Whether defective in mind, sight, hearing, or speech, or whether crippled, maimed, or deformed, with name or defect
- Whether a prisoner, convict, homeless child, or pauper.

- The third section provided space to tally the following information about each dwelling and or home:
- Was the home the family lived in hired, or was it owned by the head or by a member of the family
- If owned by a member of the family, was the home free from "mortgage encumbrance"
- If the head of the family was a farmer, was the farm which he cultivated hired or was it owned by him or a member of his family
- If owned by the head or member of the family, was the farm free from "mortgage encumbrance"
- If the home or farm was owned by the head or member of the family, and mortgaged, what was the post office address of the owner
- Over 99% of the 1890 census records were destroyed by fire and flood.
