1800's Census Records
The 1800 U.S. Federal Census:
- Census Day was 4 August 1800.
- The second census included the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. It was also to include the District of Columbia and the Northwest, Indiana, and Mississippi territories.
- The census collected the following information:
- Name of the head
- Number of free white males
- under 10 years
- 10 years but under 16 years
- 16 years but under 26 years
- 26 years but under 45 years
- 45 years and upward
- Number of free white females
- under 10 years
- 10 years but under 16 years
- 16 years but under 26 years
- 26 years but under 45 years
- 45 years and upward
- Number of all other free persons
- Number of slaves
- Original census returns for Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, Tennessee, Virginia, and the territories (Northwest, Indiana, and Mississippi) were lost over the years. Washington County records from the Northwest Territory survived.
- While the District of Columbia existed in 1800, its census was managed by Maryland and Virginia. The Virginia managed returns were lost, but the Maryland returns survived.
