The 1870 U.S. Federal Census:
- Census Day was 1 June 1870.
- The ninth census included the states of Alabama, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin; the District of Columbia; and the territories of Arizona, Colorado, Dakota, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and Indian.
- The questionnaire provided space to tally the following information:
- Dwelling - Houses numbered in the order of visitation
- Families numbered in the order of visitation
- The name of every person whose usual place of abode on the first day of June 1870, was in this family

- age at last birthday. If under 1 year, give months in fractions, thus 3/12
- Sex (M), Female (F)
- Color White (W), Black (B), Mulatto (M), Chinese (C), Indian (I)
- Profession, occupation, or trade of each male person over 15 years of age
- Value of real estate
- Value of personal estate
- Place of birth naming the state, territory, or county
- Parentage
- Father of foreign born
- mother of foreign born
- If born within the year, state month (Jan & c.)
- If married within the year, state month (Jan & c.)
- Attended school within the year
- Education
- Cannot read
- Cannot write
- Whether deaf and dumb, blind, insane, idiotic, pauper, or convict
- Constitutional relations
- Male citizen of U.S. of 21 years of age and upwards
- Male citizen of U.S. of 21 years of age and upwards where rights to vote is denied on other grounds than rebellion or other crime
- There are no substantial losses.
