Mrs. J. C. Williams

Death of Mrs. J. C. Williams - On last Sunday night at 9:30 o’clock, after several days suffering Mrs. J. C. Williams gently passed away. Mrs. Williams was one of the earliest settlers of this place, she having come here long before the late war, and has ever since and up to her death, been engaged in keeping hotel. She was a kind-hearted and Christian lady, and although very much imposed upon at times by some, she never was known to turn anyone away from her door hungry. This caused her to loose in a financial way to a considerable degree, but she succeeded in accumulating a considerable possession, which she divided equally between her three sons, Carroll A., Thomas D. and Roscoe L. The burial services took place on Monday afternoon and were presided over by the Rev. R. B. Cavett, pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member. A large number of friends accompanied her remains to Shady Grove and there witnessed the last sad rites.

(Editor’s note: Her grave stone in Bateman Cemetery gives: Jane C. Ferguson Williams, wife of G. W., b 27 May 1825 d 8 July 1888.)
