HELENA, ARK.
Death of an Old and Respected Citizen.

HELENA, March 12 - Major A. Wilkins, of this city, one of the oldest settlers of Phillips county, died at his residence yesterday at 10 o'clock of pyemia, aged 64 years. He was born in Lexington, Ky., and came to this State in 1832 and settled ..... Helena, over 40 years ago. In 1832 he was elected to the Legislature on the Whig ticket. He served on Hindman's staff during the entire war. He was part owner of the Southern Shield, the first newspaper ever published in Eastern Arkansas. He became a prominent merchant, and afterward started the Helena Yeoman, a newspaper which attained great popularity in Phillips county. He was a popular and most excellent gentleman, and had hosts of friends in New Orleans, Memphis, St. Louis and all over the State of Kentucky. Those who claim to be posted positively assert that he is father of 35 legitimate children by three wives, the number of children including nine pairs of twins.
