Bart Y. Turner

It was a bright young life, an ambitious and very promising young life that was cut off when Bart Y. Turner died this morning at Poplar Grove at 7:30 o’clock. His health had not been good and the severe attack of that always dangerous disease. Hematuria, that laid hold upon him speedily sapped his vitality. He was eighteen years of age.

The deceased was the son of the late Bart Y. Turner (his mother is now Mrs. Valley White) one of the most popular men that ever lived in Phillips county, the staunchest friend that a man could want under any and all circumstances, the first democratic sheriff of Phillips county immediately after the war and before the carpetbag rule, and was again elected sheriff on the restoration of democratic rule in Arkansas in 1878. He served several terms.

Young Bart gave promise of making his mark, being bright, ambitious and a splendid student. With his brother Renfro he attended the Kentucky Military Institute at Lyndon, and there won golden opinions and attained to coveted honors. Sometime ago, when Kentucky Military Institute closed for the summer, the Louisville courier-Journal contained an article which made very complimentary mentions of both Renfro and Bart Y. His death is a loss; not only to the family but the community and the country suffer a loss when such young men as he are called away. He leaves his mother, Mrs. Valley White, and a brother, Renfro Turner, a grandmother, Mrs. Amanda Renfro, an uncle, Mr. N. L. Graves and an aunt Mrs. Lizzie Brooks.

The remains will be brought to Helena tomorrow morning over the Arkansas Midland arriving at 9:30 and the cortege will proceed direct to Maple Hill Cemetery, where father and son will rest side by side. The services will be conducted by Rev. Lee H. Richardson. The pall bearers are Shelby Turner, Sidney Connelly and John Hudson of Poplar Grove, John N. Ware, George Nicholls, Jamison Jackson, Jamie Mayes, Joe Horner of this city.
