Captain Jack A. Stokes

CAPTAIN J. A. STOKES: The funeral of the late Captain Jack Stokes was held this morning at 10 o’clock at the family residence on North Ohio Street, Rev. W. H. Sledge, pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating in the absence of Rev. W. W. Harrison, pastor of the deceased. The pall bearers were selected from Sam Corley Camp of Confederate veterans, as follows: Messrs. C. N. Biscoe, Robert Gordon, C. Quarles, J. C. Barlow, C. Wooten and E. W. Short. Many other veterans and a large number of friends of the deceased gentleman attended the services and accompanied the funeral party to the city cemetery where the remains were laid to rest. Capt. Stokes leaves a wife and one daughter, the latter living in Memphis. Captain Stokes was a Confederate soldier, enlisting in the 12th Tennessee in the western part of the state as a private and serving until the end of the struggle. He came to Arkansas shortly after the close of the war and was one of the most faithful members of Sam Corley Camp of Veterans.
