Justice Simon F. Hughes

SIMON P. HUGHES DEAD - Thursday morning at his home in Little Rock, Justice Simon F. Hughes, formerly of this county, passed over the river of death. Mr. Hughes came to Arkansas from Tennessee, and settled at Clarendon in this county in 1849. He was elected sheriff in 1854, serving 2 years, afterwards practicing law. In 1861 he raised a company and joined the Confederate Army as captian of Company A, 23rd Ark., Moore:s Brigade. He was elected Lieut.- Col. and afterwards held that rank in Morgan’s Texas cavalry. He returned home after the war and was elected to the legislature, a member of the constitutional convention, Attorney General of the state and in 1884 was elected Governor. He was a member of the Supreme Court of Arkansas at his death. He was married June 2, 1857 to Anne E., daughter of George Blakemore, then a prominent planter in the south end of this county. Justice Hughes was a member of the Methodist Church, a clean good christian man, an efficient officer and all of Monroe County mourns the death of such an honored son.
