Obituary of Rev. S. S. Hemmingway
Rev. Sullivan S. Hemmingway died at the home of J. A. Brookins, on East Shelton Avenue, in this city, at noon on Friday, December 1st.
The deceased, with his wife, moved from Adona, Ark., to Monticello about a month ago, hoping here to regain his rapidly waning health. He was taken sick enroute and has been ill practically every since his arrival. Mr. Hemmingway was a native of Vermont, served successfully in both armies during the war of 1861-64, and moved to Arkansas in 1866. He was at one time county and probate judge of Newton County, and at the time of his death was a retired Christian minister.
The burial took place Saturday afternoon at Oakland cemetery, where Rev. F. Shepperson conducted funeral services. The deceased is survived by his wife, by his sister, Mrs. J. A. Brookins of this city and four grandchildren in Oklahoma.
Editors note: S. S. Hemmingway was in Monroe County, AR, by 1872, where his credentials were registered as a minister of the Church of Christ. He married many citizens of Monroe County during the 1870's, 1880's & early 1890's.
