Isaac Halpern

Turner Paragraphs: We are sorry to learn of the death of Isaac Halpern on Oct. 29 at his home in Clarendon. He came to Clarendon away back in the fifties, a poor man, and lived in an old box house for many years. ...He was twice married, having married sisters, the Misses Peterson, whose brother, Jones Peterson, lives at Blackton. He leaves a wife and one child, Mrs. Johnson, formerly Mrs. Matthews. These, with his grandson, young Matthews, are the legal heirs. He is said to be worth $50,000 and to have lost as much dealing in futures and in bad investments within the past 6 or 8 years.

Wfe to be sole executrix, & to have all personal property containing cash, notes, rent notes, mortgages, bank stock, book accounts, horses, mules, cattle, wagon, carriage, farming implements, etc. & to wife, in trust for grandson, several lots in Clarendon, 590 acres of land, etc.
To dau: over 1700 acres of land in Monroe Co., 1000 acres of land in Phillips Co, lots in Marvell, Ark., and 160 acres of land in Lee Co. The will stated that Isaac’s occupation was merchant.

Elizabeth Halpern b 15 Apr 1837 d 11 Dec 1877 (1st wife Elizabeth Peterson, mother of his dau. Annie R.).
Nannie A. Halpern b 5 Sep 1846 d 3 Dec 1902 (Jones M. Peterson her brother).
Isaac was postmaster 1868 - 1875 & 1878-1880. He was also referred to as a banker, as he kept a safe in his store for folks to keep their money.
