OLD CITIZEN FASSES AWAY...J. A. Cocke, One of Monroe County’s Oldest Citizens, Died on Last Thursday at Holly Grove - At his home in Holly Grove on Thursday af last week, J. A. Cocke, one of the oldest citizens and Ex-Confederate soldiers in Monroe County, passed to the great beyond. Mr. Cocke was born in Monroe County, Miss., in 1937, and came to Monroe County, Arkansas, in 1845, and has been living here until his death. He was indeed a brave and true veteran, having enlisted in Co. A. 1st Arkansas Infantry, in April 1861, in the Confederate service, and afterwards transfered (sic) into the 15th Arkansas. (Pat Cleburne Old Regiment.) His campany was known as The Harris Guards. Following are the battles in which this brave veteran fought: Elkhorn or Pea Ridge, summer of 1861; Shiloh, April 6 and 7, 1862; Richmond, Ky., Aug. 30, 1862; Perryville, Ky., Oct 8, 1862: Murfreesboro, Tenn., Dec. 31, 1862 and Jan. 1, 1863; Chicamauga, Ga., Sept. 19 and 20, 1863. He was captured Sept. 19, 1863 and carried to Camp Douglas, at Chicago, Ill., kept there until March, 1865, was sent to New Orleans to be exchanged and was on the way down the Mississippi River, a little below the mouth of White River, when the war ended. He got back to Clarendon about the 1st of May, 1865. He was survived by a loving wife and seven children, all of whom, with one exception, were present at the time of death. Henley, Brinkley; Mrs. R. L. Perrod, Reeseburg, Va. The services were conducted at the Methodist Church in Holly Grove, Rev. H. C. Hoy officiating. There were fifteen or twenty exquisite floral designs given by friends, who attended his funeral. The Masons took charge of the burial at the cemetery.
