FATAL FIGHT AT CLARENDON
Ladd Carruth Is Knocked From Porch to Concrete Walk by Dolph Bowers, and His Neck Is Broken.
DEATH WAS INSTANTANEOUS
Carruth's Body Lay on the Sidewalk for Some Time Before It Was Discovered That He Was Dead.
Special to the Gazette.
Clarendon, Jan. 11. - Ladd Carruth, aged 30 years, a resident of this place, was instantly killed here at 2 o'clock this morning by Dolph Bowers. He and Bowers engaged in a fistie encounter on a porch, and Bowers knocked Carruth from the porch to a concrete sidewalk, Carruth falling on his head and neck. His neck was broken, and death followed immediately. Bowers was arrested and is held in jail.
It is alleged that Carruth had been drinking, and that he first had trouble with a man by the name of Flinn in Lofton's restaurant. The two are said to have engaged in a fight with knives, each escaping serious injury. Carruth then left the restaurant and later became embroiled in a quarrel with Bowers, who, it is claimed, took up Flinn's side in tge former quarrel. The dispute started on the porch in front of Manning & Emerson's law office.
Bowers is alleged to have accused Carruth of hitting Flinn with brass knueks. Carruth is said to have denied the charge and to have cursed Bowers. Bowers then struck him with his fist, knocking him from the porch to the concrete walk.
Carruth did not move after he fell to the walk, but none of the men present on the porch at the time of the quarrel thought him dead. All left, and it was some time afterward that it was discovered that Carruth was dead. Marshal Frank Hurse, Dr. Thomas and Jamea E. Engle were called in, and an examination revealed the fact that Bowers' neck had been broken when he fell to the walk.
Bowers is a stranger here. Carruth is fairly well known here. He has an uncle, W. L. Kelly, living at this place. He also has a sister who resides in Memphis and who is en route here to take charge of the body.

Ladd Carruth was 30 years old and it is said had been drinking. He first became involved in a fight, it is said, with a man named Flinn. Their trouble started in Lofton's restaurant, and both are said to have drawn knives, but the fight did not result in any injury to either.
It is said that later, when Carruth met Bowers and became involved in a second quarrel, Bowers defended Flinn.
Carruth was charged with striking Flinn with a pair of knucks. Following the quarrel on the porch in front of the law office of Manning & Emerson, Carruth and Bowers engaged in a fist fight. A blow knocked Carruth off the porch, his head striking the concrete pavement and the fall broke his neck. His death was almost instantaneous.
Bowers was placed in jail. Little is known of him here.
