Nicholas Brickell

NICHOLAS: BRICKELL - Nicholas Brickell, father of Rev. T. J. Brickell of this city, died at his home in Poplar Grove Wednesday afternoon at 4 o’clock. While he had been in an enfeebled condition several months he had only been confined to his bed about two weeks, Until shortly before the hour of his death he was thought to be in no worse condition than during his illness. He was suddenly attacked by a sinking spell and never rallied. Mr. Brickell was 82 years old his last birthday - in May. He was a sincere optimistic christian. Even in his advanced age - the period of "second childhood," he was always cheerful, enduring his infirmities without a murmer and looking forward with joy to the approaching day of separation of body and spirit. About ten years ago, while yet active, he made all preparations against the day of his burial. With his own hands he made the casket and box in which he wished to be buried and later provided all the burial necessities. He also bought and erected in the family cemetery in this city the monument that now marks the resting place of his body. Surely he was a saint, simply awaiting transition. The deceased is survived by a wife, in Poplar Grove, two brothers, one in Georgia and one in North Carolina, and one sister in the latter state; three sons, T. J., of this city, J. B., of Helena, and W. P. of Poplar Grove; two daughters, Mrs. John Raleigh, of Marvell, and Mrs. Joe Miller, of Commerse, Tex. All of these children were present at the funeral in this city Thursday at 6 p.m. except Mrs. Miller. Mrs. Fred Jackson, daughter-in-law, and Miss Winnie Brickell, grand-daughter, of Clarendon and William Brickell, grandson, of Poplar Grove, were also present. The funeral party was met at the Midland depot by friends and the procession at once proceeded to Oaklawn cemetery where an impressive service was held by Rev. H. B. Cox and the body of the faithful patriarch in Christ was laid to rest, in view of children to the third generation. "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord."
